A First Look: Sydni Johnson Shares Her Journey Beyond Basketball
This October, Fourth Quarter Plus Overtime is giving our audience a special first look at a story that is very close to the heart of our mission.
As we continue production of the Fourth Quarter Plus Overtime documentary, we are releasing a short preview featuring Sydni Johnson and her reflections on growing up playing basketball, the experiences that shaped her as an athlete, and what life looked like when basketball was no longer at the center of everything.
This short clip is just one piece of a much larger story. The upcoming documentary explores the athlete journey through the experiences of the Johnson family, with a focus on resilience, identity, mental wellness, transition and discovering purpose beyond sports.
For so many athletes, sports provide structure, friendships, discipline, competition and a sense of identity. But eventually, every athlete reaches a point when the game changes—or ends altogether. And then comes a different set of questions:
|
Who am I when I’m no longer playing?
What parts of the athlete in me do I carry into the next chapter?
How do I redefine success when there is no scoreboard?
And what does life after sports look like for me?
|
Sydni provides some insight into those questions as she reflects on her basketball experience and the transition into life afterward. Her story is not intended to provide all the answers. Instead, it offers an honest look at one athlete’s journey and introduces a conversation that will be explored more deeply in the full documentary.
It is also a powerful example of why Fourth Quarter Plus Overtime was created. Our mission is to empower athletes with the resources, knowledge and support they need to succeed—not only in sports, but in life.
